What is this?
I don’t think I’ll ever be back in the mindset I found myself in the months after moving back to New York in April 2013.
I’d made an attempt once before to say good-bye to all that but it resulted in a painful heartbreak and my moving away from the open spaces and stars of the American Southwest and back to the concrete and misery of the city.
The way I was able to cope
I tried keeping busy. When not caring for a sick relative or my kids who were about to make me into an empty nester I was out taking pictures and taking whatever DJ gigs that came my way. It was one of the most depressing times of my life, where I came to the realization I was at rock bottom. That realization came shortly before I took to the turntables and created this set.
What did I do with this sudden insight?
This DJ set was my first attempt at climbing out of the hole I’d placed myself. What I was feeling that night was captured in this abridged DJ set.
I decided to revisit this DJ set after receiving a letter from a friend I’d made during my time in the American Southwest. The letter reminded me of the battle she had also faced and had spent considerable time coming to terms with the aftermath.
The artists way!
We are much better and happier now. However, because we are artists and we make use of our experiences to create, there’s really never a letting go. I think that’s a good thing. We know how to transform what was once painful into something beautiful.
This is some of the beauty from 2013
I hope you find this DJ set not only funky and fun to listen to but also beautiful.
